Neverwas

Plot Summary

Zach Riley, a psychiatrist who abandons a prestigious academic career to work at Millwood, a private mental institution tied deeply to his painful past. Zach’s father, T.L. Pierson, was once a celebrated children’s author who wrote the beloved fantasy novel Neverwas, a magical story about a young boy rescuing an imprisoned king in a hidden world. Behind the book’s success, however, lay tragedy: Pierson struggled with severe depression, spent years at Millwood, and eventually died by suicide. As a child, Zach discovered his father’s body, leaving him emotionally scarred and burdened with guilt for decades.

At Millwood, Zach hopes to quietly reconnect with the mysteries surrounding his father’s life, though he hides his personal connection from the institution’s director, Dr. Reed. Soon after arriving, he is assigned to treat Gabriel Finch, an elderly schizophrenic patient who believes he is the captive king from Neverwas. Finch insists that the fantasy world described in the novel is not fiction at all, but a real place hidden within ordinary reality. Initially, Zach assumes Finch’s stories are simply elaborate delusions inspired by his father’s book. Yet Finch seems to possess intimate knowledge about T.L. Pierson, the origins of Neverwas, and details from Zach’s childhood that no stranger should know.

As Zach investigates further, he reconnects with Maggie, a woman from his childhood who also shares a strong emotional connection to the book and to his father’s legacy. Through conversations with Finch and Maggie, Zach learns that his father based much of Neverwas on stories told to him by Finch during their time together at Millwood years earlier. The boundaries between imagination and reality begin to blur. Places and symbols from the novel appear to exist in real life, and Zach slowly starts to believe that Finch may not be entirely delusional after all.
