Plot Summary

A cheerful, quirky young woman living in a small English town. With little direction in life but a naturally optimistic outlook, Lou takes on various jobs to support her family. After losing her position at a local café, she becomes desperate for work and accepts a job as a caregiver for Will Traynor, a wealthy young man who was left paralyzed after a tragic accident. Will, once an adventurous and successful banker, now lives as a quadriplegic and struggles with depression and bitterness about his condition. Initially, he is cold, sarcastic, and resistant to Lou’s presence. However, Lou refuses to be discouraged.

Her bright personality, unconventional fashion sense, and genuine kindness gradually begin to break through Will’s emotional barriers. As they spend more time together, Lou and Will form an unlikely friendship. Lou introduces Will to small but meaningful joys, such as watching films, listening to music, and venturing outside his home. In return, Will challenges Lou to think bigger about her own life and potential. He encourages her to pursue new experiences, broaden her horizons, and stop settling for less than she deserves. Lou eventually learns a heartbreaking truth: before she was hired, Will had decided to end his life through assisted suicide at a clinic in Switzerland.

His parents had made a deal with him to wait six months, hoping that a change in his outlook might alter his decision. Devastated, Lou resolves to show Will that life is still worth living. She plans outings and experiences—from concerts to a holiday trip—in an effort to prove that happiness is still possible despite his limitations. During this time, their relationship deepens into love. Lou believes her growing bond with Will might convince him to change his mind. However, Will remains firm in his decision, explaining that while he cares deeply for Lou, he cannot accept the loss of the life he once had.
