Plot Summary

Lydia Deetz hosts a paranormal talk show called Ghost House and is estranged from her daughter Astrid, who disapproves of her mother’s psychic abilities and believes that ghosts never existed, after her husband Richard died while in the Amazon. While taping an episode, Lydia sees Beetlejuice, who tried to marry her,[b] in the audience. Lydia’s stepmother Delia later discloses that her father Charles has died in a shark attack as the family returns to Winter River for his funeral. At the wake, Lydia’s boyfriend and producer, Rory, pressures her into marrying him on Halloween and she hesitantly agrees.

Meanwhile, Astrid receives a cruel prank by her classmates when they put up a fake ghost decoration to scare her as a result of being a daughter of the Ghost House talk show but she makes a snarky comment in an unfazed way but later meets local boy Jeremy Frazier, who invites her to spend the holiday with him. In the Afterlife, Betelgeuse manages a call centre consisting of shrunken-headed employees and remains obsessed with marrying Lydia, whom he is now haunting. Former actor-turned-detective Wolf Jackson informs him that his ex-wife, occultist Delores LaFerve, has resurfaced and is draining the souls of the deceased while hunting him down.

The couple met during the Black Death in Italy when Delores poisoned Beetlejuice during their honeymoon as part of an immortality ritual; he then butchered her before succumbing. Astrid realizes she has inherited her mother’s abilities and discovers that Jeremy has been dead ever since he murdered his parents long ago. He persuades her to accompany him to the Afterlife so she can see her father, in reality, a trick to exchange souls so he can live again. After hearing of Jeremy’s backstory from local realtor Jane Butterfield Jr., Lydia reluctantly summons Beetlejuice, who reveals his deception.
