Almost Human

Plot Summary

John Kennex is a police detective working in Los Angeles in the year 2048, a time when crime has increased dramatically and technological advancement plays a major role in public safety. During a catastrophic ambush early in his career, Kennex loses his partner, one of his legs, and much of his memory. After spending seventeen months in a coma, he returns to active duty with a sophisticated prosthetic limb, still carrying physical and emotional scars from the attack. His experiences have left him dealing with trauma, distrust of androids, and ongoing psychological challenges as he adjusts to life back on the force. Friendship and cooperation between humans and machines shape everyday life in his world, and law enforcement has adopted a policy that requires each officer to work alongside a synthetic partner.

These androids are designed to assist with policing tasks that range from dangerous confrontations to complex investigations. Kennex’s initial reaction to this mandate is hostile; his aversion to androids is so strong that he destroys his first assigned unit. When a replacement synthetic is assigned to him, it is unlike the standard models. Named Dorian, this android exhibits emotional responses and personality traits that deviate from purely logic‑based programming. The unexpected combination of human‑like behavior and advanced processing capabilities creates a dynamic partnership between the detective and the synthetic. Dorian’s presence brings out new responses in Kennex.

Both must learn how to communicate effectively and trust one another in high‑stakes situations. Their work includes responding to violent crime scenes, gathering and analyzing evidence, and confronting organized criminal elements. Police work in this era combines traditional investigative procedure with advanced technology, including real‑time data collection, android analytical functions, and interactions with other specialized units tasked with managing threats that ordinary law enforcement cannot address alone. Kennex and Dorian operate alongside other officers who bring different strengths to their assignments.

Episode List

Episode 1: Pilot

In the year 2048, an unprecedented increase in the crime rate has made being a cop only more dangerous than it is today, necessitating that every police officer partner with an android.

Detective John Kennex and Dorian are dispatched to investigate a murder and high-profile missing persons case that lead them into the highly profitable world of IRCs – Intimate Robot Companions – also known as sexbots.

The thrilling action continues in another all-new, adrenaline-fueled episode. Detective Kennex and Dorian battle an intense and futuristic hostage situation.

An old cop friend of Detective Kennex’s goes undercover, posing as a “cook” of a highly addictive street drug called “The Bends.” But his cover is blown.

Kennex and Dorian must protect a witness in a major murder trial; Capt. Maldonado butts heads with a defendant.

Detective John Kennex and Dorian respond to a suspicious death at a hospital where – before having a fatal cardiac arrest – a man claimed someone was trying to kill him, and inexplicably knew his exact time of death.

Det. Kennex and Dorian investigate Simon, a psychopathic killer who is strapping bombs to his victims’ neck and broadcasting their final moments over the internet.

Det. Kennex and Dorian investigate a crime scene involving a self-guided bullet that can track, target and kill specific people at any moment. Meanwhile, Maldonado revisits the deadly ambush that almost killed Kennex.

A refurbished, advanced DRN (Gina Carano) that operates like a soldier goes on a rampage, resulting in casualties; Dorian and Kennex ask a genius roboticist and DRN creator for help.

When Det. Kennex and Dorian investigate the simultaneous and sudden deaths of two genetically-enhanced – or “chrome” – children, a fatal dose of the perfect designer drug appears to be the cause.

Kennex and Dorian investigate when a smart home turns on its occupants.

When Det. Kennex and Dorian investigate the murder of a “chrome,” there are no signs of trauma, other than a very small pinprick on the back of his neck.

A series of murders are committed by someone copying a serial killer who was put in jail by Kennex’s father.
