Almost Paradise

Plot Summary

A former DEA agent has left behind his career in the United States and now lives in a scenic Philippine island town where life moves at a slower pace and community ties run deep. He manages a small café that doubles as a social hub, where locals gather for coffee, conversation, and the occasional game of chess. His experience with law enforcement has shaped his skills in observation, analysis, and conflict resolution, but day‑to‑day life in this tropical setting allows him to engage with others on a more personal level, away from the intensity of his former work. Residents of the island include business owners, families, local officials, tourists, and expatriates who each contribute to the rhythm of everyday life.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, yet human nature means that disagreements, mysteries, and unusual problems still arise. Issues that may seem minor at first — a missing item, a misunderstanding between neighbors, concerns about local safety — can escalate, prompting careful consideration and problem‑solving. He draws on his past training to help in these situations, using reasoning and communication rather than force to resolve matters. Local law enforcement interacts with him in various capacities. Officers in the police department handle formal duties such as responding to disturbances, enforcing regulations, and ensuring public safety. Their collaboration with him often comes through mutual respect and a shared interest in maintaining peace.

While their roles differ, cooperative efforts sometimes lead to effective outcomes when dealing with difficult circumstances that go beyond routine policing. Conversations with officers bring attention to differences in procedure and perspective, highlighting the contrast between large metropolitan law enforcement and community‑oriented practice in a smaller setting. In the café, customers share stories that uncover social dynamics, cultural traditions, and personal histories. Community members sometimes seek advice, reassurance, or simply a listening ear.

Almost Paradise

Episode List

Episode 1: Finding Mabuhay

When an ex-DEA agent retires to a tranquil, out-of-the-way resort in the Philippines, he finds himself falling back into his undercover operative ways when he’s pulled into a drug sting run by the local police department.

When the body of a friend of Detective Alamares washes up on a beach, Alex suspects the international smugglers who just checked in at the resort may be involved. While Ernesto tracks down the murderer.

When Alex discovers that a group of mobsters are shaking down local street-food vendors, he goes undercover as a Spanish crime lord to bring the criminals to justice.

When a crew for a reality TV show exploring sunken WWII battlegrounds arrives at the resort, Alex’s need for rent-money ensnares him in an illicit dive operation with potentially catastrophic consequences.

When a typhoon hits the Island, criminals and their hostages are trapped inside the police station. Alex must find a way to save his friends… as well as a sworn enemy – a US State Department bureaucrat there to “do a deal”.

Alex, feeling competitive, races to solve a murder before a celebrated detective can find the killer. Things take a turn for the personal when Alex realizes the crime leads back to the murder of Kai’s mother fifteen years before.

Alex’s con-artist Uncle Danny comes for a visit to make amends and Alex finds himself caught between protecting the world from his Uncle and protecting his Uncle from Kai and Ernesto… and a very pissed off mafia leg breaker.

When Alex takes a job protecting a country singer he idolizes; he quickly learns that you should never meet your heroes. But when the singer is kidnapped, Alex must figure out who is really behind the crime and rescue him.

Kai is assigned to a clandestine intelligence operation during the wedding of Tommy Chow aka the Scorpion, the boss of the Qin Xiong Di, Hong Kong’s most brutal Triad.

The partner who betrayed Alex shows up on the island, and Alex’s long-absent daughter shows up on his doorstep to tell him she’s joined the Peace Corps.

Alex befriends a boat mechanic wrongfully accused of murder in a remote fishing village, and, along with Kai and Ernesto, unravels an international smuggling operation.
