Plot Summary

In the freezing expanse of Barrow, Alaska, in 1988, local news reporter Adam Carlson discovers a trio of gray whales trapped by rapidly encroaching shelf ice in the Arctic Circle. Realizing the gravity of their plight, Adam recruits his ex-girlfriend, Rachel Kramer a fierce Greenpeace volunteer to help launch a massive campaign to save them. Adam affectionately names the whales after the Flintstones: the father Fred, the mother Wilma, and the smallest, a struggling calf named Bamm-Bamm. The plight of the whales becomes a global sensation, drawing together an unlikely coalition of normally hostile factions.

The rescue effort forces a collaborative truce between the local Inupiat whale hunters, who initially view the whales as food, and environmental activists. As the media circus grows, the cause is joined by a profit-driven oil executive, ambitious journalists, the National Guard, and even the President of the United States. Politics on state, national, and international levels collide as everyone seeks a piece of the spotlight. Adding to the eclectic mix are two entrepreneurs from Minnesota, who arrive with specialized de icing machines to prevent the whales’ breathing hole from freezing over. Despite the monumental efforts, the ice proves too thick for human machinery.

In a surprising Cold War-era gesture of cooperation, an enormous Soviet ice breaker is dispatched to clear the final path. Though the ship’s first attempt barely makes a dent, it eventually smashes through the barrier. Fred and Wilma finally swim to freedom, though tragically, young Bamm-Bamm succumbs to his injuries. The epilogue reveals the lasting impact of the event: the oil executive secures the Exxon Valdez cleanup contract, the de-icer inventors find local fame, and Adam finally reunites with Rachel. As young Nathan reflects on the massive hole in the ice, he notes that it grew until it “let the whole world in.”
